Alpha Domus Collection Hawke's Bay Merlot Cabernet 2017
- Dark plum & berries
- Vanilla spice
- Soft tannins
- Lingering finish
"A beautifully maturing red showing dark berry, dried herb, toasted spice and hazelnut aromas on the nose, leading to a supple palate that's ripe and attractively flavoursome. Well rounded and complex with a pleasing dry finish. At its best: now to 2024" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Mar 2022
An appealing, well balanced Hawke's Bay blend with a classic bouquet of fragrant vanilla spice, dark plum, liquorice ad berry fruit. A finey textured and generous red, with a satisfying depth of flavour that flows through to a lingering savoury finish. The soft tannins and bright fruit profile are typical of the Bridge Pa district.
Fruit for this wine was sourced from the estate vineyard. Winemakers use a variety of clones grafted on 3309 and 101-14 rootstocks. All vines are cane pruned with bud reduction, shoot thinning and second set removal performed as required. Bunch thinning takes place as needed. Fruit selection is based on ripeness levels and flavour.
The individual varieties were harvested separately at optimal ripeness, at the point where flavour has developed, and tannin structures have softened but still with enough natural acidity to give freshness. After destemming, the grapes were fermented separately with warm temperatures and reguar pump overs to extract colour and flavour. Extended maceration on skins post ferment adds depth and complexity to both flavour and structure. At blending, fruit forward batch and some darker spicier barrels were selected to give excellent drinkability delivering immediate satisfation.
Food Pairing: Perfect with your pasta or pizza nights, full flavoured dishes and red meat.
