Alpha Domus Estate The Barnstormer Hawke's Bay Syrah 2018
- French oak
- Cherry & dark berry
- Vanila & sweet spice
- Savoury notes
An aromatic Syrah with aromas of vanilla, white pepper, boysenberry and violet. Sweet spice aromas add complexity. Medium bodied with flavours of cherry and dark berry fruits, black olive and savoury tones, French oak imparts spice and vanilla. Soft supple tannins and a lingering finish make this an excellent food wine. This is a harmonious exciting wine that makes every mouthful a pleasure.
Grapes were picked in serveal passes from the estate vineyard to obtain a range of ripeness levels and to add complexity. All vines are cane pruned with bud redcution, shoot thinning and second set removal performed as required. The 2018 vintage gave us the opportunity to pick Syrah grapes with exceptional flavour and balanced acidity.
The grapes were gently destemmed and lightly crushed to purpose built red fermentation tanks. Rhone yeasts were selected to carry out fermenation allowing the full potential of aromatic intensity to be reached. The ferments reached 32ºC and remained on skins for between 21 and 35 days depending on the tannin texture. After presing, the wine was racked twice over a 12-month maturation period and was bottled early January to retain the vibrant, varietal fruit characters. A true expression of the terroir.
Barnstormers were daredevil pilots who roamed the countryside during the heady days of the roaring twenties, bringing aerial excitement to a public thirsty for this wild new thrill.
Food Pairing: Great with pizza, classic bolgnese, romano pasta, lamb, and game meats.
