Gil Family Honoro Vera Monastrell 2019 (Spain)
Its pleasing nose reveals notes of underbrush, mineral, and blueberry leading to a savoury, spicy, nicely balanced medium-bodied wine.
Made with grapes of Monastrell from vineyards planted on chalky and rocky soils very poor in nutrients and without irrigation, the resulting wine is very aromatic with a high concentration of fruit.
Bringing together ten different artisanal vineyards from across Spain’s major wine regions, Gil Family Estates takes the small-production philosophy and gives it greater exposure, at an attractive price point. All the wines within this range are as distinctive and creative as the artist-designed labels that adorn each bottle, reflecting the unique soil types and climates of their respective regions, as well as the unique touches of their artisan winemakers. The result is a range that tells a comprehensive story of Spain’s dramatically varied wine regions and the colourful characters who create them. The Gil Family is based in Jumilla, an upcoming winegrowing area just south of Valencia where the original winery, Juan Gil, is also located. The family established this winery in 1916, and since then it has been refined and expanded to take advantage of the remarkable climate – which sees hot summers and long, cold winters, with a regular difference of 25 ºC between day and night temperatures. The success of these wines allowed the family to start working with other likeminded producers around Spain from 2002 onwards, in the regions of Castilla y León, Montsant and Priorat, Calatayud, Rueda, Almansa and Rías Baixas.
