La Piuma Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2020 (Italy)

  • Dark fruits & cherry
  • Savoury notes
  • Supple tannins
  • Vibrant finish

"Wines like this beauty is why Montepulciano is one of Italy’s most popular reds" Steve Bennett, Master of Wine, Importer

"Bright, high energy red with cassis, dark cherry/berry, cacao powder, liquorice and spice supported by a pleasantly drying backbone of fine tannins and gentle acidity. Accessible now, the wine is very good value at this price" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, May 2023

"Splendidly ripe with enticing complexity, the bouquet shows blackcurrant, smoked meat, brown spice and toasted almond characters. The palate displays bright fruit flavours with silky texture and grainy tannins, making it sturdy and flavoursome with a pleasing dry finish. At its best: now to 2025" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, May 2023

Owned by Italy’s largest private equity company, Argea has integrated several long-standing wineries into a common project founded on quality, development, and sustainability. Drawing on a truly impressive range of resources, they are able to craft distinctive, high-quality wines at compelling prices as illustrated by this outstanding wine which was Bob Campbell Master of Wines top red in July 2023.

The rolling hills of the Abruzzo region in Eastern Italy are the spiritual home of Montepulciano, Italy’s 2nd most important red grape. This is a wine-style where spending just a few extra dollars can make a world of difference. As is the case here. Excellent drainage and sunlight exposure on rolling hills, calcareous clay soils, lower cropping and organic viticulture have all contributed to a wine that has ripe, bright, juicy berry characters and lush texture to balance the vibrant acidity and sappy tannins.

This wine shows great colour intensity with characters of dark berry fruits and black cherries with savoury notes.. Dry on the palate with a core of fruit flavours, moderate structure and lively acidity to cut through rich food. Drink now through 2025.

Food Pairing: Most definitely a food wine where the savoury flavours compliment those of the food and the acidity acts as a freshener balanced against the richness of pizza/ragout/cheese.
