Matchbook Dunnigan Hills Petite Sirah 2018 (California)

Matchbook Dunnigan Hills Petite Sirah 2018 (California)

  • Combination oak
  • Cracked-pepper
  • Licorice
  • Broad finish

Lots of fresh cracked-pepper spice and juicy red fruit complement the earthy fig, plum and hint of leather. The wine is broad on the palate with mouth filling flavours of dark chocolate and black licorice.

Petite Sirah grown in the Dunnigan Hills produces the full-bodied, well-structured wine expected from this distinct varietal.

East of Napa, Left of Center: The Giguiere family embodies Dunnigan Hills winemaking. In 1981 they pioneered grape-growing in this region when they planted their very first vineyard. By 1993 they had succeeded in making the Dunnigan Hills a nationally recognised American appellation. The Matchbook flame is a homage to the Giguiere brothers' youthful fascination with fire. Today Matchbook Wine Comany produces over 15 wines showcasing the varietals that perform best in the warm, dry climate.

The grapes were gently crushed 20 minutes after harvest, then fermented in small temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. They used a combination of specially selected yeast to enhance colour and flavour extraction without harsh tannins. They pumped the tanks over twice a day until dearly dry, then pressed and aged the wine in a variety of French, Hungarian and American oak barrels for 16 months. Barrel lots of Petit Verdot, Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon were selected to enhance the Petite Sirah's robust structure and intense flavour.

Food Pairing: Pair this sumptuous red with slow cooked back baby ribs and any smoked or barbequed meats.
