Mills Reef Reserve Hawke's Bay Syrah 2018
- American & French oak
- Boysenberry & vanilla
- Peppery spice
- Supple tannins
This delicious Syrah conveys boysenberry fruit and peppery spice, with a hint of vanilla and toasty oak. Full bodied and imbued with supple integrated tannins.
This superior wine was sourced from grapes mainly grown on Mere Road Vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels District (harvested on the 29th of March), plus a smaller portion from Moteo Vineyard in the low- lying Puketapu Hills (harvested on the 25th of March) in optimum condition.
Three parcels from carefully chosen rows were vinified separately. After a three day cold soak to extract important colour and flavour components, the musts were fermented with selected yeasts in closed-top stainless steel vats, with diligent cap management, before the resulting wine parcels were pressed off the skins. They were then aged for eleven months in quality oak, 56% American and 44% French, of which 26% was new wood. The three parcels were then brought together on 26 March 2019. The final wine is un-fined, but filtered just before bottling under Stelvin screwcap closure.
Reserve wines are from low-yielding vines producing superior grapes showing intense fruit flavours and pure varietal expression. The winemaking philosophy is to achieve “balance” of flavour, structure and texture.
Food Pairing: This complex wine is eminently enjoyable on its own or to accompany your favourite red meat dishes.
