Mystery Hawke's Bay Syrah 2018 (02)

Mystery Hawke's Bay Syrah 2018 (02)

  • New oak
  • Blackberry
  • Floral
  • Ripe tannins

"Deep and still youthful in colour, the 2015 vintage (4.5*) was grown in the Bridge Pa Triangle and matured for nine months in French oak casks (12 per cent new). It has a fragrant, fresh, spicy bouquet, leading into a full-bodied, strongly varietal wine, with good complexity and excellent depth of plum, spice and black-pepper flavours. Retasted in mid 2018, it is maturing very gracefully and likely to be at its best 2020+" Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide, 2020

Plum and blackberry flavours with hints of florals and spice. Bright palate of sweet, spiced fruit, juicy acidity and ripe tannins.

This Syrah is grown in the Bridge Pa Triangle subregion of Hawke’s Bay. Warm temperatures, coupled with free draining red metal gravels, provide the ideal conditions for growing Syrah. Crops were thinned down to one bunch per shoot to provide ripe and concentrated fruit flavours.

Fruit for this reserve wine was de-stemmed and partially crushed then fermented in a mixture of open top and closed top tanks. The open fermenters were hand plunged and the closed top were rummaged and pumped-over for extraction. Inoculated with cultivated yeasts to promote fruit aromatics, the wine was also coinoculated for malolactic fermentation during primary fermentation. Fermentation took on average seven days, with a three week post-maceration period before pressing. The wine was racked to French barriques (225L) and matured for nine months before being blended and bottled. The final blend consists of 25% new oak.

Food Pairing: Perfectly matched with tomato-based pasta & soft creamy cheeses.
