The glass is full of vibrant aromas of passionfruit, guava and tropical fruit, with a whiff of blackcurrant bud. The palate showcases classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc characters of passionfruit, blackcurrant and guava, the ripe fruit flavour is complemented by an intriguing saline minerality an underpinned with a focused, but approachable acidity. This wine will continue to drink well for the next five years.
Our Bull Paddock Vineyard is located in the Dillons Point sub-region of Marlborough’s lower Wairau Valley. The land was originally used for raising bulls, before the Neylon family realised the potential of the site and planted it in Sauvignon Blanc. The young, free-draining, alluvial soils now produce grapes with elevated aromatics and ripe flavours. We believe this sub-region grows the best Sauvignon Blanc in all of Marlborough.
The 2023 growing season started with above average bunch numbers in most districts in Marlborough. Unsettled and cooler weather over flowering resulted in loose and lighter bunches, with the net effect of producing average yields across most varieties and regions. The weather around the time of veraison was unstable, and at times threatening. We just missed out on the destruction of the cyclone that hit the east coast of the North Island. The weather then settled into a pattern reminiscent of the harvests in the early 2000s. The nights were particularly cool, and this helped to arrest any small levels of botrytis that had started in the early unsettled weather. It was a vintage where patience was rewarded and those who waited harvested fully ripe grapes with concentrated flavours and classic acidity. The Bull Paddock Vineyard is only minutes from our winery, the proximity minimises skin contact prior to pressing, allowing us to capture all the expressive fruit flavour and aroma, without bitter phenolics. After harvest, the grapes were gently pressed before individual parcels were batch fermented in stainless steel, using a selection of yeast strains chosen to enhance aromatics.

Of water and wine, and of generations of family working with nature. Our label depicts the rocky aquifer at our home vineyard, and the pristine springs that connect it to our land.
