Spy Valley Marlborough Chardonnay 2019
- French oak
- Citrsus & florals
- Sweet spice
- Nutty & savoury notes
Floral and citrus notes combine with sweet spice aromatics. Citrus notes accentuate and enhance the savoury and nutty barrel influences. The primary fruit characters will continue to unfold for several years and time will reward. Nutty and savoury complexities will continue to build and provide great interest through 2022-2027
Waihopai Valley “B BLOCK” - alluvial stony silt loam, very well drained. Clone 95. Clone 95 was imported into NZ in 1988, it produces wines of weight, balance and complexity. Vertical shoot positioning with shoot and bunch thinning to restrict yield. Open canopies with dappled sunlight on the bunches.
2019 was a very dry and warm growing season bringing small yields with great fruit concentration. One of our earliest harvests with picking starting at the beginning of March and completed by early April.
Hand harvested over 2 separate hand picks, fruit was pressed as whole bunches with the free run juice briefly settled before draining to French oak barrels. Barrels remained in our cellar to undergo a long slow spontaneous fermentation, with the separate batches being assembled 15 months after harvest. After final blending the wine was left to rest in tank before preparation for bottling.
