Squawking Magpie's Single Vineyard 'The Gravels' Hawkes Bay Syrah 2016
"Even, very dark, purple hued ruby-red colour, a tad lighter on the rim, and very youthful in appearance. The nose is gently packed with aromas of ripe dark raspberries with hints of blackberries, entwined with dark-red and violet florals, along with black and white pepper and spices. Medium-bodied, the palate has rich, sweet and juicy fruit flavours of dark raspberries and blackberries intermingling with aromatic red and violet florals, a subtle layering of black and white pepper with spice notes and nuances of iron-earth minerals. The palate has fine-grained tannin structure and balanced acidity supporting the fruit. The mouthfeel carries the juicy fruit to a soft-textured, dry, lingering finish. This is a rich and juicy Syrah with dark raspberry and black fruits, pepper, floral and spice detail on a fine-grained, well-structured palate. Match with Middle Eastern fare over the next 5-6+ years. 100% Syrah fruit from the Gimblett Gravels, hand-picked and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 35% new oak" Raymond Chan, Dec 2017
Premium single vineyard grapes from a great vintage have produced a lovely perfumed, dark concentrated wine. Seamless, with supple tannins this Syrah delivers a smooth and spicy finish
