The Landing Bay of Islands Syrah 2019

The Landing Bay of Islands Syrah 2019

  • Oaked
  • Dark berry
  • Liquorice
  • Toasted berry finish

Their 2017 The Landing Syrah is bold and expressive, with dense dark berry and black cherry aromas supported by notes of game, liquorice and cigar leaf. Juicy mouth-watering acidity is in balance with black cherry, tobacco, granite and ash, and the toasted berry finish has a delicious peppery texture.

The fruit was destemmed to open top fermenters and hand plunged until fermentation was complete. After a short post-ferment maceration the wine was pressed to tank, settled, then racked to barriques for maturation on fine lees. After 18 months in oak the wine was blended and bottled.

Syrah clone MS was planted in 2007 on a north facing slope in the clay soils of the Purerua Peninsula. These mature vines were hand-picked in early April following a favourable growing season.

This true expression of Syrah, grown in their moderate Northland climate, has always impressed. They aim to bottle the purity, concentration and complexity that is grown on their site. As such, the wine is given minimal filtering.

Drinking well today and evolving over the next decade if cellared, their 2017 Syrah is bold and expressive, with dense dark berry and black cherry aromas supported by notes of game, liquorice and cigar leaf. Juicy mouth-watering acidity is in balance with black cherry, tobacco, granite and ash, and the toasted berry finish has a delicious peppery texture.

The Landing Vineyard on the Purerua Peninsula is bathed in long sunshine hours throughout the growing season, with a forgiving maritime breeze, perfect for growing the Syrah grape – and the hundreds of years of agriculture that came before us.
