Vidal Estate Hawkes Bay Chardonnay 2019
- Subtle French oak
- Stone fruit
- Citrus
- Fruit-driven
"It's attractively fruited and elegantly fragrant, showing Gala apple, nectarine, lemon peel and almond characters on the nose, followed by a finely textured palate that's gently weighted and lingering. The wine displays lovely poise and delicate intensity, finishing long and pleasingly dry" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Sep 2020
Enticing aromas of citrus, stone fruit and subtle French oak combine on a vibrant, balanced fruit-driven palate.
Fruit for this wine was grown in Ohiti Valley and Te Awanga along with the warmer, free-draining Bridge Pa and neighbouring gravel based soils of Omahu. In the vineyard, particular attention was given to “opening up” vine canopies, yield restriction and selective harvesting. The 2019 vintage and these sites have delivered a classic cool climate Chardonnay, combining ripe stone fruit with grapefruit and citrus flavours on an elegantly styled palate.
Juice from the crushed and gently pressed grapes was allowed to naturally settle before being racked with light lees to seasoned French barrique and tank for fermentation. The barrique aged portion has added subtle flavour, aroma and texture while the tank portion has provided fruit purity and clarity to the final wine. Both ferment portions were aged and stirred on lees, adding further complexity and enhancing the mouthfeel of the wine.
Food Pairing: This wine can be enjoyed on its own or served with fresh seasonal produce. As well as with seafood, shellfish, chicken or pork.
