Vidal Reserve Hawke's Bay Chardonnay 2020
- French oak
- Stone fruit & citrus
- Roasted nuts
- Finely textured
"It’s attractively fruited and elegantly expressed on the nose showing white flesh peach, mango, nougat and roasted cashew aromas, followed by a finely textured palate delivering rounded mouthfeel and creamy texture. Well balanced by juicy acidity, finishing long and tasty. At its best: now to 2024" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Mar 2021
The 2020 vintage has produced a classic Hawke's Bay Chardonnay. Beautifully fragrant citrus, stone fruit and roasted nuts combine on a finely styled, textured and balanced palate showing good complexity.
This wine was produced predominantly from the winemakers Keltern Vineyard and balanced with sites in Ohiti and the Omahu Gravels. The soil type and climate of each site have contributed particular characters to the final wine. The warm and dry summer allowed early picking at great ripeness. Picking decisions allowed the wines to express intensity with fine palate definition and length.
Juices from gently pressed whole berry grapes were settled before being racked with light lees to French oak barriques for natural and inoculated fermentation. Following this, some batches went through malolactic fermentation to balance out the natural acidity. Oak barrels were selected for their subtle flavour and aroma, adding complexity from 10 months maturation. Sensitive winemaking has allowed site and season to be reflected, supporting the complex and elegant style of this wine.
Food Pairing: This wine pairs well with shellfish, poultry and fresh seasonal dishes.
