Astrolabe Marlborough Chardonnay 2017
- French oak
- Crème brûlée
- Stone fruit & fig
- Creamy mouthfeel
"Quite a rich bouquet, weighty and quite intense with aromas of oak and sweet wood toastiness, an unfurling complexity captures the senses. Dry with flavours of wood spice and ripe tree fruits, some citrus and peach moments with plenty of acidity and youthful freshness finishing with a satin cream texture. Balanced and well made - drink now and through 2024" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Oct 2018
Mid straw-gold colour in the glass. Full ripe melon and dried stone fruits and fig, light nut meal and brûlée notes, with some light leesiness. A wine of gentle creaminess and elegant texture, with tropical and stonefruit flavours, pleasing weight and long, dry finish. The wine will near its best drinking after two year’s bottle age, and age gracefully thereafter. The wine was bottled 6th March, 2015, and is already drinking very well.
The Astrolabe Province Marlborough Chardonnay is made from grapes grown at Astrolabe Farm Vineyard in the lower Wairau Valley and Wrekin Vineyard in the Southern Valleys.
Winemakers hand-pick the grapes and whole-cluster press to reduce phenolic structure and allow attractive grape solids fermentation characters to come through. The wine is then aged in French-oak barrels, lees-stirred and allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation to give structure, body and complexity.
Food Pairing: Great with poultry, pork and light game, creamy seafood and pasta dishes, and mushroom risotto.
