Brokenwood Cricket Pitch Red Blend 2020 (Australia)
Superb aromas with lifted Cabernet fruit and background vanillin oak. The Shiraz component adds dark fruit, mid-palate weight and sweetness along with the ripe tannins, which give great length and persistence to the finish. Cabernet is not ‘dense’ in terms of colour but this wine has a lovely purple hue, simply one of the best Cricket Pitch reds and a lovely drinking wine as always. A drink now style that will further soften with medium term bottle maturation.
The 30th vintage of Cricket Pitch Red (not counting the 1986) is both multi-varietal and multi-regional. Following on from the bushfires that impacted Eastern Australia, this wine is a blend of premium regions in South Australia and Western Australia. The varietal breakdown is Cabernet Sauvignon 53%, Shiraz 38% and Merlot 9%. A warm to hot vintage across all regions in 2020 producing mouth filling, juicy reds.
A combination of static and rotary fermenters used, after 2-3 day cold soak prior to ferment. This wine is matured in French oak up to 18 months with a small percentage being in new oak barrels.
Food Pairing: Pairs well with rich seafood, pasta and light meat dishes.
