Camshorn Hawke's Bay Riesling 2021

Camshorn Hawke's Bay Riesling 2021

  • Dry style
  • Lime & apple
  • Racy acidity
  • Full-bodied

This wine opens with aromas of lime, apple and orange blossom. The palate is full bodied and layered, with pithy lime, racy acidity and a wet stone minerality. The finish is fresh green fruits and persistent lime. This wine is ready to drink upon release with exuberant fruit flavours showing. Riesling has the capacity to cellar well over the next 5 or more years if more developed, honeyed characters are desired.

Waipara is a small yet diverse growing area. It provides a cool climate, a long dry autumn and high diurnal variation, ideal for growing aromatic wines. Together with a range of clay and gravel soils, this sunny valley, sheltered from the prevailing winds, is the perfect setting for growing the grapes with concentrated characters and minerality. Our Camshorn vineyards are along the East coast but sheltered from cool Easterly winds by the Teviotdale Hills, allowing warm daytime temperatures at ripening. The vines are planted on a combination of Glasnevin Gravels and Salix Clay soils. Glasnevin Gravels are light, free-draining stony soils, consisting of a thin (200-350mm) silt loam topsoil overlaying a stony, sandy loam with sandy gravels underneath.

The fruit for this wine is machine harvested in early April. In the winery, the grapes were gently crushed into the bag press and resulting juice was clarified. Fermentation was carried out with selected aromatic yeast, at low temperature in stainless steel tanks. The ferment was stopped leaving some residual sugar to balance the natural fruit acidity. The wine was blended, fined and filtered before bottling, and no oak was used in the winemaking.

Food Pairing: Try matching this food-friendly wine with Japanese tempura, both seafood and vegetable. The clean citrus notes will be great with simple grilled fish such as halibut. The fruit sweetness and touch of spice will pair well with fresh Asian dishes such as prawn laksa, but equally with a spicy BBQ pork recipe with some rich molasses sweetness.
