Esk Valley Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2021
- Dry style
- Subtle oak
- Baked pear & honey
- Powerful & textural
This is a rich style of Pinot Gris with aromas and flavours of baked pear, honey, citrus and apricot. It is mouthfilling and complex, finishing long and dry. A small portion of barrel fermentation has added richness and complexity to this powerful, textural and highly drinkable wine.
The fruit for this wine was grown on free draining river terraces formed by the Ngaruroro River. These inland sites with warm days and cool nighttime temperatures are ideal for the production of high quality Pinot Gris. These vines now approaching 20 years of age are intensively managed, allowing us to harvest clean and well ripened fruit.
The grapes were harvested in the morning while temperatures were cool and processed as quickly and gently as possible to avoid colour and tannin pick up from the pink Pinot Gris berries. The juice was settled bright before fermentation in both tank and large old oak barrels. The finished wine was left on its yeast lees with regular stirring until bottling in July 2021.
Food Pairing: Very versatile. Can be enjoyed on its own or with soft cheeses, pork, chicken and seafood dishes.
