Kono Nelson Pinot Rosé 2018
- Summer berries
- Zesty lemon
- Green melon
- Cherry
A delicate salmon pink in the glass, this Pinot Rosé displays aromas of strawberries, lemon and light florals leading to a palate of bright cherry, summer berry fruit and
delicate green melon. Bright fruit flavours are balanced with zesty acidity and a touch of soft phenolics, leading to a lusciously fresh and dry finish.
Early harvested fruit from this Nelson vineyard is machine picked in batches and transported to the winery in Marlborough – just over three hours away. This long transit period allows the colour and flavour found in the grape skins to be everso-gently released into the juice before arriving at the winery. Once at the winery the grapes are quickly drained and pressed into a stainless steel tanks for settling and fermentation. The ferments are carried out with selected yeast strains and at cool temperatures (around 13°C), allowing the wines to retain their freshness and vitality. Once fermented, blending decisions are made with the resulting wine having the perfect balance of fruit, phenols and acidity. After blending the resulting wine is allowed to settle before being stabilised and cross-flow filtered without fining, ready for bottling in mid-July.
This Pinot Noir Rosé is entirely sourced from the stunning Whenua Matua vineyard in the Nelson region of New Zealand. The 2017/2018 growing season in Nelson began with very warm and dry conditions, enabling excellent flowering and fruit-set in the vines. Much needed rain fell in mid to late January, however the much heavier rain that fell between February and March provided challenges for the vineyard team – with record levels seen over the first three months of the year. Meticulous canopy management in the period leading up to harvest combined with the excellent early season conditions meant that good flavours and balance were seen in the grapes when harvested in early March, with total yields down on previous years.
Food Pairing: Enjoy this wine with a cheese platter & salmon or seafood starters.
