Anciano ‘No.5’ Rioja Crianza Tempranillo 2018 (Spain)

Anciano ‘No.5’ Rioja Crianza Tempranillo 2018 (Spain)

  • American oak
  • Cherry & wild strawberry
  • Cocoa & baking spices
  • Fine tannins

"This is an impressive Crianza. Spicy, savoury and sweet, all at once, showing dried cherry, leather, cocoa, game and almond notes on the nose, leading to a splendidly flavoursome palate offering ripe fruit flavours with silky texture and fine tannins. Gorgeously drinking. At its best: now to 2024" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Nov 2022

"Made with Tempranillo showcasing aromas of wild starwberries and dark fleshed plums, there’s a light baking spice quality with dusty clove and vanilla suggestions. The biggest impact comes on the palate with a mix of plum and tart cherry flavours, some black berries then baking spices. Tannins are abundant, finely textured and enhanced by the acid line. Moderately weighted, balanced and ready to drink with moderately rich protein dishes with lots of tomato. Best drinking from day of purchase through 2026" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Dec 2022

legant, complex, well-structured, fresh and fruity. Classic Rioja style which is enjoyed in the many tapas bars of Logroño. Aromas of red fruits and vanilla with subtle hints of liquorice and toffee. Silky and persistent finish with a touch of spice. Ageing potential 3-5 years. Suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans.

Anciano Rioja Crianza comes from leading producer Criadores de Rioja located near Logroño, at the heart of Rioja Alta. The winery belongs to a family with one of the longest traditions in Rioja winemaking and winemaker Azucena Hervella is assisted by consultant oenologist Norrel Robertson MW

Crianza wines are aged for a minimum of 2 years with 1 year in oak barrels. In central Rioja, the climate is a unique confluence of Continental, Mediterranean and Atlantic. Grapes are hand-harvested from mid-September from 100ha of outstanding vineyards, including a selection of bush-trained vines with an average age of 20 years. Ripe grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks with the temperature controlled at 28˚c. Following fermentation and several days maceration, the wine is aged in American oak barrels for 12 months. This results in the perfect balance of fruit and oak flavours.

Food Pairing: Versatile with all kinds of Mediterranean dishes such as pasta, rice, white meat, pulses and barbecues.
