Ata Rangi Potiki Martinborough Chardonnay 2020
- French oak
- Lemon & grapefruit
- Almond & vanilla
- Silky texture
"A very specific bouquet reflecting site and time. Aromas of citrus and fragrant spice, perhaps lemongrass or wild flowers, there’s a fine soil layer, quite silty with a silica or sandstone scent. The oak layers on with a calm and measured approach. Silk texture touches the palate first immediately contrasted by a fresh fruit core of citrus and orchard fruits, acidity and bite of oak. A lovely wine best kept in your cellar till early 2023 then drink through 2030+" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Dec 2021
"It's gorgeously elegant and inviting on the nose showing white flesh stone fruit, lemon pith, almond meal and subtle vanilla notes, leading to a beautifully focused palate offering pristine fruit flavours with fleshy texture and bright acidity. Splendidly styled and delightfully expressed with excellent persistency. At its best: end of 2022 to 2030" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Dec 2021
"Potiki is a blend of wines from both new and established vineyards. It is an accessible wine with citrus, grapefruit, roasted nut, bread crust, almond and five-spice flavours. An appealing wine with a strong spicy oak influence" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Nov 2021
"Combining lovely herbal and mineral complexity with slight spice on the palate, this is really quite classy without sacrificing bright, lively fruit character. The palate’s overall lift and lightness hides a considerable amount of concentration, but where the 2018 expressed it as power and size, the 2020 is all about detail and elegance. All of this wonderfully interwoven complexity finishes on a lovely nutty note that conjures echoes of modern Meursault" Stephen Wong, Master of Wine
Pōtiki, meaning ‘last born’ in Maori, is blended from a selection of newer plantings and some of our more established blocks on the Martinborough Terrace. Barrel fermented in 300 litre puncheons with indigenous yeasts.
The 2020 vintage Is concentrated and detailed, balanced with vibrant acidity. The aroma is a wonderful blend of fennel notes, rock melon and citrus blossom. The palate is focused, with a salty, mineral line that finishes with flavours of fresh white almond.
Hand-picked fruit was whole bunch pressed, with the unsettled juice fully barrel fermented in Burgundy 300L puncheon barrels (20% new) using indigenous yeasts. Partial malolactic. Aged in barrel on lees for 13 months.
