Elderton Estate Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 (Australia)

Elderton Estate Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 (Australia)

  • French oak
  • Wild thyme
  • Dark fruits
  • Very fine tannins

"This is Eden Valley dominant and has aromas of violets, blueberries, black cherries and dark berry pastry with attractive, cedar and fresh-tobacco notes. The palate offers very attractive chocolate, plum paste and licorice. Smoothly layered tannins with blueberry flavor and a little oak spice to close. Great concentration" James Suckling, Aug 2020

Deep crimson purple in colour. Bouquet of fresh varietal blackberry and wild thyme with hints of dark olive. Concentrated dark fruits on the palate and hints of clove and dark chocolate, supported by very fine elegant tannins and a seamless finish. A full bodied, rich and classy styled Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Ashmead family purchased their first estate vineyard in the middle of Nuriootpa in the late 1970s and since making their first wine from the 1982 vintage, have developed a great reputation and an enviable history of success. The 1992 Cabernet Sauvignon won the prestigious Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy in 1993, showcasing Elderton’s ability to make great Cabernet. Second generation brothers, Cameron and Allister, have since purchased two other exceptional vineyards in the east and west of the Barossa, with fruit from all three vineyards going into this 2018 Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon.

There are a number of blocks of Cabernet on the Elderton estate vineyards at Nuriootpa, Craneford and Greenock. Some of the best parcels from the three vineyards sites are blended to create this Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes, which are lovingly tended to by Peter Wild and Conrad Pohlinger, are mainly harvested at Baume around 13.5 - 14.5, reached with the help of the Mediterranean climate and a long dry Autumn. A larger proportion of Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has been used in this vintage blend, as the ripening conditions allowed for fuller flavours and tannin ripeness in the Craneford vineyard. This has given their 2018 Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon a lovely floral lift.
