Elephant Hill Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2021
- French oak
- Ripe peach
- Citrus
- Mouthwatering
"There’s an instant and captivating bouquet with aromas of mineral stone and saline scents layered between ripe stone fruit, ripe citrus peel, apple and barrel spices with a light white smoke quality. Complex and new. Delicious, dry and complex on the palate and with fruit from the ‘Sea’ and ‘Earth’ vineyards the fresh spiced qualities of the Te Awanga site with its citrus and white fleshed fruit flavours along with a lick of salinity and the denser richer fruit flavours from the Bridge Pa site present a textured and flavourful wine. Acidity, fine wood tannins and lees set the foundation and key components for ageing. Lengthy finish with best drinking from late 2023 through 2029+" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Mar 2023
"Bright, even, pale yellow. The nose is gentle and soft, with aromas of citrus, oyster shell, hazelnut underlying stonefruit and cream custard. Medium-full bodied, aromas of lemon, grapefruit and pith entwined with peach, roasted hazelnut, warm custard and oyster shell. The mouthfeel is creamy and voluminous, supported by salivating acidity, flowing with a chalky texture and carrying hazelnut elements to a lingering, nutty finish. Match with grouper and roasted artichoke over the next 5 years" Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, Mar 2023
"Labelled as 'classic, fresh seaside Chardonnay', the 2021 vintage (5*) certainly lives up to expectations. Estate-grown and hand-picked at Te Awanga, it was fermented and lees-aged for a year in French oak casks (20 per cent new), then aged for a further five months on its light yeast lees. Bright, light lemon/green, it has a fragrant, gently oaked bouquet. Mouthfilling, it has rich, peachy, citrusy flavours, hints of butterscotch and toasty, fresh acidity and a long, dry finish. A vibrant, complex wine, it's already drinking well, but very ageworthy too" Michael Cooper, Buyer's Guide
"Mostly from an estate coastal vineyard in Te Awanga with a small addition from the Bridge Pa area. Rich, creamy wine with lime, green apple, nectarine and white peach flavours supported by bright acidity" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Mar 2023
Classic, fresh seaside Chardonnay blended with a small portion from our warmer inland vineyard adding richness. Racy and flavoursome with piercing citrus, underlying peachy ripe notes. Mouthwatering and concentrated, elegant and refined.
A fantastic vintage for Hawke’s Bay with picking starting early for the whites with good ripeness achieved whilst maintainiing natural fresh acidity levels. The wines are stylistcally elegant, mineral and well defined.
100% handpicked Chardonnay, 82% from SEA vineyard (Te Awanga) and 18% from EARTH vineyard (Bridge Pa Triangle). Whole bunch pressed. Aged 12 months in French oak, 20% new, and a further 5 months, all on light lees.
