Hunter's Marlborough Pinot Noir 2021

Hunter's Marlborough Pinot Noir 2021

  • French oak
  • Black cherry & plum
  • Dark spice & vanilla
  • Supple finish

"Aromas of black cherry and plum, some dark spices of wood and barrel ageing layer in suggestions of vanilla and five spice. Lovely texture and mouthfeel with fine chalky tannins and acidity framing core fruit flavours and wood spice highlights. Well made, youthful and lengthy. A wine best enjoyed from 2024 through 2029+" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Sep 2022

"Still very youthful, this graceful red was grown mostly in the Southern Valleys, handpicked and matured for a year in French oak barrels. Deep, bright ruby, it is mouthfilling, sweet-fruited and savoury, with strong, vibrant cherry, plum and spice flavours, showing very good complexity, and supple tannins. Offering good value, it’s well worth cellaring to 2024+" Michael Cooper, Aug 2022

This Pinot Noir is an excellent example of a well-balanced and fruit forward Marlborough Pinot Noir. The wine shows wild berry and cherry fruit notes that flow seemingly onto the palate with plum and rich fruit cake characters. Smooth tannins compliment the dry spice on the palate that accentuate the rich and supple finish. Drink now and up to 5 years+.

At the start of the growing season, we had several frost events affecting isolated areas in Marlborough. During flowering there was a cold spell of weather, which had a significant effect on the region’s fruit set. While this affects the yield, it can help promote concentration of aromas and flavors in the grapes. Mild summer conditions help with even ripening of the grapes which allowed perfect conditions to pick at optimum ripeness.

A warm Marlborough summer provided excellent fruit for this 2021 Pinot Noir. Grapes for this wine were grown on hillside vineyards in the Southern Valleys sub region of Marlborough. This area is famed for producing rich and structured wines. The fruit was hand harvested and fermented on skins for three weeks before pressing. The resulting wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels prior to bottling. The wine was bottled with minimal filtration. Naturally occurring sediment may remain.
