Julicher Estate Martinborough Pinot Noir 2015

Julicher Estate Martinborough Pinot Noir 2015

"Stylish and beautifully composed, the complex bouquet shows dark berry, game, earthy mushroom and cedar characters, leading to a concentrated palate that is fleshy and silky. The wine offers gorgeous fruit richness backed by refined mouthfeel and flowing texture, finishing impressively long and engaging. At its best: now to 2022" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Sep 2018

"Full, even, dark ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is gently full and voluminous with harmoniously entwined aromas of dark-red berry fruits along with an amalgam of dark-red florals, fragrant herbs and subtle earthy notes. This is refined in expression and has good intensity. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegant with bright and lively, finely concentrated flavours of dark-red berry fruit along with subtle notes of dark herbs and dark-red florals. The mouthfeel is luscious and vibrant with the sweet fruit supported by fine-grained tannin extraction lending a smooth-flowing line. Fresh, lacy acidity lends vitality and the wine carries to a bright, juicy finish. This is a bright and vibrant, elegantly concentrated Pinot Noir with dark-red fruits and subtle herb and floral lift on a fine-grained palate. Match with wild duck and pork over the next 5+ years. Hand-picked fruit, clones 5. 115, 667 and Abel, destemmed and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 25% new French oak" Raymond Chan, Sep 2018

Dark ruby red colour in the glass. Perfumed with aromas of dark plums, dried herbs, mint and earthy tones. Powerful, full-bodied and well structured wine with flavours of ripe plums and spice. Well integrated tannins, intense mouthfeel and a long velvety finish. Drink from now up to 2024.

‘Te Muna’ means ‘secret place’ and the Te Muna Terraces are situated five km east of Martinborough village. The vine growing area is situated in the old Huangarua River path sheltered by the Aorangi Ranges. The soils of Te Muna Terraces are free-draining alluvial gravel, which are rich in minerals making it ideal for growing grapes. The climate is an extension of Martinborough and similar to Burgundy, being only slightly cooler due to higher altitude, but with long cool summers and low rainfall providing the optimum long ripening conditions for grapes.

This wine is a barrel selection blend of different Pinot Noir clones sourced from Julicher Estate vineyard in Te Muna Road, Martinborough. The grapes were hand-harvested and de-stemmed into a small open top vats for fermentation with 25 % whole bunches. The must received a 3 to 5 day cool pre-fermentation maceration before the fermentation begun. The cap was treated with a punch down 2 times daily during the peak of fermentation. After fermentation finished, the wine was pressed into new (15%) and old French oak barrels for maturation and underwent complete malolactic fermentation in the spring. After 10 months of ageing the wine was racked off lees and blended. Unfined and sterile filtered for clarity.

Julicher Estate (pronounced ‘U-li-ka’) is a family-owned boutique Martinborough winery focusing on the production of prestige quality wines with distinctive fruit flavours. All Julicher wines are estate grown on their 20 hectares of vineyards on the Te Muna Terraces.
