Paddy Borthwick Wairarapa Sauvignon Blanc 2023
"Beautifully fruited and inviting, the bouquet shows golden kiwifruit, rockmelon, lime zest and sweet basil aromas, followed by a succulent palate displaying excellent vibrancy and intensity. Immediately appealing and highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2027" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit Jul 2023
"Bright, even, pale straw yellow. The nose is vibrant and lifted, with citrus, tropical fruit, floral and subtle spice aromas. Medium-bodied, aromas of lemon and zest melded with guava, blossom, white spice and saline. The vibrant acidity flows smoothly along with finely textured phenolics to a dry finish. This Sauvignon Blanc shows balance and poise, generous with fruit and smooth flowing" Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, Aug 2023
"A lovely expression of SB with a bouquet of white fleshed fruits and citrus, some layers of red apple flesh and wet stone mineral. As the wine opens out in glass the natural herbaceous signatures begin to show with fresh angelica and basil. A youthful, taut and crisp textured wine touches the palate first, then flavours of citrus, fresh herbs and white fleshed fruits return. A moment of tropical fruit also shows. Balnaced, well made and ready to drink from 2023 through 2027+" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Jul 2023
The 2023 growing season has produced a wine with great concentration. A fragrant lift of spiced stone fruit, tropical fruits with a hint of dark herb notes. Packed with flavour, a core of ripe nectarine and lemon-lime acidity, finishing with a great length of flavour.
Established in 1996, proudly family owned and managed, Borthwick Vineyard produces wines that are a direct reflection of the Gladstone region, New Zealand. Ancient stony, alluvial soils, a cool climate, sustainable practices and minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery, mean our wines display distinctive single vineyard characteristics.
The vines range in age from 10 to 16 years old and are harvested from 2 blocks in the estate vineyard. The older block 1 vines are now well established, with roots sitting deep in our alluvial soils. We like to keep it simple in the vineyard, allowing the vines to give the expression.
The growing season for the 2023 vintage. saw an early budburst with high growing degree days resulting in an earlier than usual harvest. 2023 provided some challenging growing conditions but good vineyard and canopy management and many extra hours amongst the canopy during the lead up to harvest produced clean ripe fruit at harvest time. Great flavours colour and balance across the varietals.
The harvested fruit was processed quickly to retain the vibrant aromas and fresh acidity. Settled and inoculated with yeast, for fermentation in tank. The wine was blended after several months on lees, it received no fining additions, was filtered, and bottled.
