Pikes 'The Merle' Clare Valley Riesling 2018 (Australia)
- Blossom
- Mineral
- Lemon
- Focus finish
"A very delicate and refined nose with subtle blossom and lemon juice aromas. The palate has exceptional flavour and purity bound by a fine core of acidity. Excellent drive. Enjoy now or cellar for further complexity" Toni Paterson, The Real Review, Feb 2019
"Fascinating melon, lime and green-apple character with hints of crushed stone and minerals. Full bodied, dry and creamy textured. Love the focus and purity to this wine" James Suckling, Jun 2019
This wine displays a brilliant, pale green. Accompanied by classic aromas of crushed lime leaf and citrus blossom initially, then some more subtle slatey/flinty notes. The palate is crisp, fresh and slightly talcy/slatey – the linear aspects of this wine showing through very clearly. It has enough fruit weight to keep it all in balance though. Citrus characters emerge more as the wine opens up in the glass exhibiting great length and poise.
Another terrific vintage of “The Merle”. It will certainly appeal immediately to those who like fresh, young Rieslings, but for those who like a little more complexity of bottle aged Riesling.
This wine has cellaring potentiontial for 7 -12 + years is recommended.
Food Pairing: Japanese seafood dishes especially sashimi and sushi, oysters, raw seafood, creamy sauces and goat cheese dishes all pair beautifully with this exceptional dry Riesling.
