Russian Jack Martinborough Pinot Noir 2018

Russian Jack Martinborough Pinot Noir 2018

  • Dark cherry
  • Ripe strawberry
  • Warm spice
  • Fine tannins

"Sweetly fruited and beautifully fragrant, the wine shows dark cherry, ripe strawberry, warm spice and roasted nut characters with a touch of meaty complexity on the nose. The palate is succulent and refined, delivering terrific fruit purity combined with seductive savoury nuances, finishing long and velvety" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, May 2019

The 2018 Pinot Noir is a vibrant wine with an elegant crimson hue. Aromas of cherry and bright plum mingle in the glass. The palate follows with crisp red fruit complimented by a pleasant acidity and fine tannins that follow through to the finish.

Russian Jack comes from vineyards that deliver lusciously ripe, juicy grapes for this wine. Long ago this land, like much of the region, was covered in scrub but thanks to the back-breaking work of men known at the time as swaggers, the land was cleared and prepared for use.

Martinborough is a sub-region in the center of Wairarapa, at the southern tip of New Zealand’s North Island. A rural area with dramatic cliffs carved out by the Ruamahanga River over thousands of years outline the flat plains between. Although it only accounts for a mere 1% of New Zealand’s total wine production, its warm summers, chilly winters, dry climate and mineral-laden rocky soils make it a premier location for growing some of the world’s best Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.

Russian Jack (1878 - 1968) was a much loved ‘gentleman of the road’ who carried his life in huge sacks upon his shoulders. During fruit harvest this mysterious man was welcomed onto the farms around Martinborough where he picked fruit into old age. He was honoured by the local population who built a bronze statue to his memory.
