Our 2019 Pinot Noir is a vibrant wine with an elegant rich ruby red hue. Aromas of bright red cherries, strawberries and spice notes mingle in the glass. The palate follows with vibrant red cherry fruit complimented by a savoury complexity and soft rounded tannins that follow through to the finish.
Russian Jack comes from vineyards that deliver lusciously ripe, juicy grapes for this wine. Long ago this land, like much of the region, was covered in scrub but thanks to the back-breaking work of men known at the time as swaggers, the land was cleared and prepared for use.
Martinborough is a sub-region in the center of Wairarapa, at the southern tip of New Zealand’s North Island. A rural area with dramatic cliffs carved out by the Ruamahanga River over thousands of years outline the flat plains between. Although it only accounts for a mere 1% of New Zealand’s total wine production, its warm summers, chilly winters, dry climate and mineral-laden rocky soils make it a premier location for growing some of the world’s best Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
Russian Jack (1878 - 1968) was a much loved ‘gentleman of the road’ who carried his life in huge sacks upon his shoulders. During fruit harvest this mysterious man was welcomed onto the farms around Martinborough where he picked fruit into old age. He was honoured by the local population who built a bronze statue to his memory.
