Sugar Loaf Southern Valleys Marlborough Pinot Noir 2019
- French oak
- Red plum
- Cocoa & liquorice
- Supple tannins
"A classic Marlborough Pinot Noir with red fruits, plum, cherry, five-spice, savoury fresh herb and subtle nutty oak flavours. A thread of fruity acidity adds energy and helps promote a lingering finish. Good value at this price" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Mar 2021
"Youthfully charming and beautifully perfumed, the wine shows Black Doris plum, dark cherry, floral, subtle spice and almond characters on the nose. The palate delivers excellent weight and fruit intensity, while remaining elegant and stylish. It's lingering with succulent fruit flavours, offering delightful drinking. At its best: now to 2024" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Oct 2020
The 2019 Sugar Loaf Pinot Noir is sourced entirely from the hillside vineyard on Marlborough's Southern Valleys, it has lifted aromas of red plum, cocoa & liquorice. The palate is elegant and lingering with summer berries, ripe plum, savoury black pepper and notes of toasty oak with delicate supple tannins.
The grapes were all hand harvested then 85% destemmed (15% left as whole bunch) before being cold soaked for 7 days to ensure maximum flavour and colour extraction. Fermentation was in small open top vessels, hand plunged three times a day. Post ferment maceration was for 7 days and free run wine was then transferred to French barrels (25% new) for ageing before a 100% malolactic fermentation in the Spring.
