The Old World Old Vine Collection
Wines that are made from old vines (vines that are 25 years + and older) are a tribute to the grower’s love of the land. They reflect the terroir, landscape, and people who lovingly tend these vineyards.
The advantage of having very old vines is that they concentrate the aromas & flavours because the vine produces fewer grapes and focuses all its energy just on these. For many years wine growers didn’t keep old vines because they do not produce enough and they need you to take more care of them as they are very fragile. However this is changing and old vines are now seen as a treasure.
The collection below is a great example of the new found love of old vines, we hope you enjoy them.
Collection includes:
2 x Calmel & Joseph Vieux Carignan ' La Fabrique' 2022 (France)
100 Year Old Vines
AWARDED 94/100 POINTS: The Tasting Panel Magazine Sept/October 2022
AWARDED 90/100 POINTS: James Suckling
AWARDED 17/100 POINTS: Jancis Robinson MW
"Gnarly 100 year old Carignan vines produce this beauty. Dark purple with soaring aromas of boysenberry, leather and flowers. Rich and robust, but with smooth rounded tannins. An absolute joy!" Wine Direct Tasting Panel
A dense, deep violet with inky black reflections. The nose is classically old Carignan with its aromas of fresh strawberry and grape followed by more intense notes of blackberry, black fig, and laurel but also green peppercorns. The tannins are well rounded, fine, very elegant, and persistent. In the mouth we find an exemplary 100% Carignan from vines planted in 1895 – a real “old Carignan” – with its fabulous red fruit, wonderful freshness, and rich texture full of juicy gariguette strawberries, white flowers, and exotic, spicy notes. This exceptional parcel selection is the expression of a superb altitude terroir that offers a superb vivacity characteristic of Carignan in counterpoint to the intense power of this emblematic Mediterranean variety. Certified Organic.

"Offering fruit purity as well as elegant complexity, the wine shows dark plum, raspberry, floral and olive notes on the nose, followed by a brightly expressed palate offering silky flow and delicate tannins. Juicy and refreshing, making it splendidly appealing. At its best: now to 2027" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

2 x Villa Blanche 'Les cepages anciens' Piquepoul Noir 2021 (France)
35 Year Old Vines
AWARDED 16/20 POINTS: Jancis Robinson
Laurent Calmel and Jerome Joseph continue their quest to bring the great and unique grapes of Languedoc-Roussillon to a wider audience with this silken, black fruit-laden and spice-edged wonder. Dark, ruby colour, the nose is fresh with aromas of ripe red cherry and berry fruit along with notes of dark raspberries, and a blend of spices, florals and liquorice. Medium-bodied, the palate has soft and gently rich character, vibrant fruit flavours of red cherries and berries with savoury spice, herb and floral touches. This is really lovely and gluggable , the fruit is sweet and juicy, and is underlined by balancing fresh acidity. A great alternative to the 'heavier' wines of the region, this is all about elegance and balance. You could say it is 'light on its feet'!
Astonishingly good and as rare as hen's teeth (maybe that's the chicken bit explained!). At the end of the last century there was thought to be only 200 hectares left globally. And that's despite the fact this is one of the just 18 varieties allowed to be used in Chateauneuf-du-Pape!
