Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2020
- French oak
- Dark plum & blackcurrant
- Vanilla bean & spice
- Polished tannins
"Opaque appearance with a core of dark purple and ruby. Very youthful bouquet with scents of ripe black currant berries and dark plums, barrel spices and a light black pepper quality layer in complexity and breadth. Some lifted toasty barrel qualities and scents of clove, spice and vanilla. Delicious on the palate - full and rich in flavour and texture. Plum and black currant, clove and toasty barrel, lees, a gun-flint and roasted nut quality. Firm tannins and a back bone of acidity ensure this wine has an excellent foundation and will age well. The core fruits are powerful and lasting. A delicious though youthful example with a long finish. Best drinking from late 2023 through 2030" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Jun 2022
"Offering fabulous fruit purity with elegant complexity, the wine shows dark plum, sweet cherry, olive, floral and roasted nut aromas. The concentrated palate displays richness as well as poise, combined with velvety texture and polished tannins, finishing impressively long and delectable. At its best: now to 2035" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Jun 2022
Captivating floral and perfumed aromas of ripe raspberries and blackberries, along with hints of Chinese five spice, black liquorice, and vanilla bean, lead to a concentrated yet vibrant palate where refined tannins and refreshing acidity combine to create a supple, silky texture and a spicy, succulent finish of outstanding length. A quintessential expression of Gimblett Gravels Syrah that will develop complex mineral, gamey characters with bottle age.
Grapes were harvested from individual blocks and clones in three distinct vineyards, de-stemmed and fermented separately. All parcels were pumped over once daily to aid optimum colour and tannin extraction. A range of maceration periods were utilised to increase textural complexity. A small percentage of Viognier skins was included in one batch to enhance aromatics, colour and texture.
Following fermentation, parcels earmarked for the Gimblett Gravels Syrah blend were matured in 5,400-litre French oak ovals for 12 to 16 months. This barrel ageing regime allows the individual characteristics of our Syrah vineyards to shine through, while allowing the wine to mature slowly and preserve each parcel’s inherent beauty, purity, and freshness. The final wine was blended in December 2021 and bottled in February 2022 with no fining.
Food Pairing: A great accompaniment with red meat dishes, especially duck and venison.
