Vavasour Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2024
"Intensely aromatic, the enticing bouquet shows Granny Smith apple, passionfruit, lime zest and feijoa characters, leading to a powerfully expressed palate that's succulent and delectable. Gorgeously styled and expressed, offering terrific drinking. At its best: now to 2029" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Jul 2024
"Vibrant, pungent, fruity and ready, a wine that hits all the boxes of freshness and style. A classic expression with myriad tropical and citrus fruit aromas and flavours, passionfruit and gooseberry, lemons and crisp apple. High acidity with a lick of sweetness for balance, but a wine that ultimately finishes dry. Ready to drink now and through end of summer 2026" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Sep 2024
A distinct bouquet evolving from tropical fruit and citrus oil to layers of fresh herb, snow pea, currents and sea shell minerality is unmistakably Awatere. A burst of citrus zest and lush, tropical fruit delivers a generous palate, with delicate herbal notes and a wet-slate minerality leading to a precise, lingering and elegant finish.
Marquee sites in the lower Awatere Valley, are noteworthy for their wide diurnal temperature swings, contributing to strong personality and incredible balance in the wines. Soils are low in fertility with stones and pebbles mixed with clay and loam. The rainfall ranges from 279-406 millimeters (11-16 inches) a year, very arid by any measure.
Fruit was harvested under cool conditions and promptly pressed to stainless steel tanks. The juice was cold settled for 48 hours before being gently racked. Specific yeast strains were selected to amplify the distinctive aromas of Sauvingon Blanc, and fermentation was kept cool to preserve fresh intensearomatics and fruit purity. Post fermentation the wine was carefully blended and left to rest on light lees for an extended period to harmonise and develop a subtle textural element. The wine was then filtered and prepared for bottling in the winter of 2024.
