Vidal Legacy Gimblett Gravels Hawke's Bay Syrah 2019

Vidal Legacy Gimblett Gravels Hawke's Bay Syrah 2019

  • French oak
  • Blueberry & plum
  • Violet & spice
  • Fine tannins

"Offering outstanding fruit purity with gorgeous complexity, the wine shows Black Doris plum, violet, clove and toasted nut characters on the nose, leading to a wonderfully rounded palate exhibiting refined mouthfeel and flowing texture. Concentrated and deeply rich, yet elegant and sophisticated" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Mar 2021

This enticingly fragrant single vineyard Syrah from the Omahu Gravels vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing District shows aromatics of violet, dianthus, blueberry and underlying spice. A small parcel of 100% whole bunch ferment adds a level of complexity and brings a fine, powdery tannin. The palate is finely balanced with concentrated red berry and plum with a fresh finish supported by savoury oak. Perfumed and elegant with great length. Distinct and age worthy.

The 2018/2019 growing season and the Omahu Gravels vineyard have produced a perfumed and elegant Syrah. Attentive canopy management and early fruit thinning ensures winemakers obtain the highest quality fruit possible. This rigorous  management and ideal weather conditions allowed for the picking decision to be made at just the right moment to retain the freshness of acidity yet deilver ripeness and tannin maturity.

The low yielding Syrah were handpicked on April 11th and co-fermented with a small parcel of Viognier from the same vineyard. Planted in 2000 the Omahu Gravels Vineyard is situated in the permium Gimblett Gravels WInegrowing District where the soil is made up of relatively recent alluvial deposits of gravel with varying degrees of silt and sand. This naturally free-draining, low vigour and "lean" site combined with detailed vineyard knowledge produces a Syrah showing perfume, texture, and underlying power.
