Villa Maria Earth Garden Marlborough Pinot Noir 2022

Villa Maria Earth Garden Marlborough Pinot Noir 2022

"It's splendidly fruited and inviting on the nose, showing dark cherry, clove, anise and warm mushroom aromas with a hint of toasted almond. The succulent palate delivers excellent weight and silky flow, beautifully framed by polished tannins. Splendidly harmonious and lingering with plenty of appealing flavours. Certified organic. At its best: now to 2030" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2024

"Aromas and flavours of bing cherry and red apple skin, red currant and spices from fruit and wood. Crisp and dry with moderately firm tannins, lots of polish and style, medium+ acid line and even lengthy finish. Best drinking from late 2023 through 2029" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, May 2023

This Pinot Noir expresses black fruits like boysenberries and blueberries with subtle floral notes and gentle acidity. The cocoa powder tannins and smoky toasty notes add complexity with a generous earthy textural finish.

The Marlborough growing season started off well with very little frost pressure during spring. Flowering went without a glitch, due healthy soil moisture levels the canopies looked lush and vibrant. The start of 2022 summer was slightly colder; February was below the long-term average in temperature however the weather settled with a slightly damp autumn.

Mixture sizes open top fermenters, gentle extraction of tannins to frame fresh fruit characteristics, natural ferments with yeasts from the vineyards are encouraged.

Food Pairing: This wine pairs well with New Zealand lamb, but rich enough to enhance slow-cooked beef cheeks. For a plant-based alternative, try with mushroom or truffle-accented dishes to accentuate it’s earthy character.
